Re: Dakota

Hi Vince --

Your boat is beautiful! But I also want to know more about your
trailer. Is it homebuilt? Is that 4" C-channel steel? Or is it I-beam?
Please tell us more and post some pictures. How long is it? Does it
support the boat all the way back to the transom, or stop short? What
is your guess for the weight of the trailer itself?

All best,

Garth
(can you tell I'm trying to figure out
the trailer for my Cormorant? . . .)

Bruce,

Charlevoix, MI is on the shore of Lake Michigan about 50 miles
south of the Straits of Mackinac. Kingston, the Rideau Canal and
the Trent-Severn waterway are definitely in our cruising plans
once this project gets finished.

I enjoyed seeing the alternate cabin scan. The permanent
double and the larger dinette are pluses.

Two possible negatives:
1. This arrangement appears to have about half the galley
counter space of the original.
2. With the weight of cabinetry, storage, tankage, etc. mostly on
one side, you would likely have a permanent list to starboard.

With Dakota, Bolger left the accomodation plan pretty open
ended. My arrangement deviates slightly from the one drawn by
Bolger. He showed the two berths offset from each other, a very
large dresser starboard and only a port side hanging locker. I
shortened the dresser to align the port and starboard berths with
each other and gain an additional hanging locker. The berths
can be used as singles, but when they are made into a double, it
duplicates the 7' X 7' king sized bed which the first mate and I
have grown accustomed to. My smaller dinette converts to a
single.

Vince
Thanks Vince,

You're making some great progress there. Where in upstate MI are you?
It's only a days drive from KIngston. I'd love to see it, either now
or after launch.

In Bolger2, files, Bolger scans, I just posted the alternate interior
Phil drew for me. It features a full time double that avoids the need
to make it up each night and a dinnette that seats 4 and coverts for
company. Take a peak here:

Bruce,

I have high hopes of getting mine done by the end of summer
'03. To my knowledge, I am the only one building a Dakota. I
suppose you have seen my photos in the group PHOTO section
("Vince's ...."). I am in Northern Michigan. If your travels bring you
this way, you are welcome to stop by. BTW, as the photos show,
I have designed the berths so they can be made up into a
KINGSIZED double bed.

Vince
Has anyone finished a Dak? And if so can anyone lead me to a photo or
two?

I've long liked the design and Phil redrew an interior for me with a
full time double bed in the stern. But I'd love to see one before I
take the big jump.

Thanks.

Ken,

In this folder from the file section of the Bolger group site I have a
couple of photos of my project and a couple of scans (poor) from the
MAIB page. The photos are a bit distorted due to being up close with a
wide angle lens (the stem is actually plumb, but in the photo it leans).
