Birch rides again.

Dimensional birch is pretty strong. It is often used in racing dog sleds
because of high strength to weight. A large hangar that was built in
Nome in support of the Lend Lease flights going to Russia was called the
birch wood hangar, I always assumed for the obvious reason. It was torn
down to make room for newer construction after standing for 45-50 years.
It never occurred to me to go after the lumber when they were tearing it
down. Why does it take us so long to get smart? There were BIG timbers
in that building.
