Re: [bolger] Re: Bolger database - errata

Thanks to Bruce for doing this. I forgot to mention before that I couldn't
always be sure that I was able to read the design numbers on the drawings
correctly, even with a magnifying glass. In particular, I wasn't always sure
whether a digit was a zero or an eight.

The 15' skiff is # 247 (Small Boats). The 38' powerboat is #170.

I posted the 160 of these designs, those not previously listed, to
the database here which now includes 354 designs.

"To Do" work for the database includes:

1) Adding "cartoon" and unfinished, but named, designs. I wish there
was a numbering scheme for these unfinished designs.
2) Posting prices, and "NFS", not for sail for the ones he is not
willing to sell. IE "Super Brick", etc..
3) General proof reading, a few numbers seem wrong. Names, etc.,
[are there really two "sea hawks"?
4) Posting of better descriptions, material types, sail area,
whatever...
5) Posting of more cross-references to where published.
6) Design Numbers are missing in BWAOM.
I've uploaded more spreadsheets to

http://www.geocities.com/howardstephenson/speedcalc.html

Those available now cover Small Boats, The Folding Schooner, 30-odd Boats,
Different Boats and Boating with an Open Mind.

There are quite possibly a number of errors in entering the data. The text in
the "Remarks" column is all my own work. I've tried to summarize one or two
outstanding features of each design.

I simplified entry of the dimensions by just showing length overall and beam
overall. I had fun with the displacement figures. PCB puts them in different
places and uses either tons (long or short?), pounds fresh or salt water, or
cubic metres. I've mostly brought them to pounds of salt water (3 percent
denser than fresh water) and used the larger of two figure when the plan
shows the displacement both lightly and heavily loaded. Where I show no
displacement figure at all, I cannot find it either in the text or the
drawings. Maybe I missed a few.

Bruce,

The AS29 "Advanced Sharpie" is design #547. The current price of
plans is $400, as I noted in the database,

porky
Another obvious omission is the Gloucester Gull dory, does anybody
know the design # and/or price of plans?
Thanks for the feedback. I was hoping someone would append my data to the
main database. I'll let everyone know when I've added to my spreadsheet.

Right now I'm sticking with the designs I have easy access to through the
books I mentioned.

You've beaten me to the punch, being two hours east of where I live :-)

I've just noticed that most, if not all, of the plans reproduced in BWAOM do
not show design numbers.

As regards prices and availability of plans, I am sure that PB&F would not
sell some of the plans, for various reasons. PCB might have had an
arrangement with those who commissioned certain designs that they would not
be made generally available. There are other cases where a design has been
presented as an example of what not to do.

Me too!

I just took the liberty of loading the 35 designs on your list which
were not previously logged to the database here, the grand total of
designs in the database is now 195.

If you post similar lists for the other Bolger books, I can load them
into the database, if no one objects.

By the way: The design numbers are missing for AS29, Featherwind,
Poohsticks, Sneakeasy, Black Skimmer, Fishcat and Tiny Cat. Anybody
know the numbers?

Also, *LOTS* of prices are missing.

Howard, like the list of boats also like the spread sheets for
calculations. There are boats that don't fall into the list of
catagories(Boats with an Open Mind, 30 Wooden Boats, etc) would you
consider also a general list of the "odd ball";) boats and if so would
you consider user input to you list. Also what about boats by
designers of similar boats. I'm all for it though.

Having a couple of hours to spare this morning I got together my idea
of a database of Bolger designs. You can see it by going to ...

http://www.geocities.com/howardstephenson/speedcalc.html

... and downloading the Excel file. If this is of any value to
others, I'll do a similar file for "30 Wooden Boats", "The Folding
Schooner", the "Small Boats" part of "Bolger Boats" and "Boats with
an Open Mind".

As all the data is taken from the books themselves, there is no
information about sources of plans. Ultimately, I'd like to see as
comprehensive as possible list of all the numbered designs.

Comments please.
