Hi Porky
I do not have access to those articles that you mentioned...is there
a way in which you could Email them to me directly or send them by
fax to 864 2880973? ...If you want to email them please do it to
smistral@.......I would apreciate it and naturally cover
what ever expenses you might incur.
thank you in advance

I recently entered references to _Messing Around in Boats_ articles
by Bolger in the Database concerning Romp and Alert (ex Manatee). The
Alert articles (Vol. 15, #6, and Vol. 16, #17) concern the conversion
of the boat to a Chinese gaff rig. There are limited drawings of the
hull and rig. The Romp article (Vol 16, #13)is a review of the two
boats built to the plan. It includes photographs, plus plan and
interior drawings. Btw, there is no provision for an engine on Romp,
a non-folding mast, and the deck to keel centerboard trunk really,
er, truncates the accomodations. The leeboards on Manatee seem, to
me, like a better way to go.

Twenty five years ago when I first read Folding Schooner, I acquired
such a case of boat lust for Moccasin, that it distracted me from the
venial pleasures of that Sin City of the North, Nome AK. This was when
OSTAR was much less high tech, and I thought I could do some damage with
a version of Moccasin.
I still get out Folding Schooner to gaze at her sweet lines. The design
has held up much better than some of my other loves from that time.

As for info on related models, Romp is an example of the flat-
floored, shoal draft model that has become Bolger's favorite and the
hallmark of his late career. At one point, I heard that he was trying
to get together a book about these boats, so you may hit the jackpot
eventually. About the first of these boats is Moccasin. Others
include Manatee/Alert, the offshore leeboarder, Barn Owl, Titania &
Tonweya.

I used to whitewater kayak with the builder of Romp. Last I heard (5
years ago), he lived in Ellijay, GA. The one thing that sticks out in
my mind when we talked about it one day was that he said planking the
boat was an ironclad pain. The boat is strip planked with a hollow
bow and flat floors, requiring the strips to twist 90 degrees and
back from stem to floor to stern. When he complained to Bolger about
it, he said Bolger replied "Yes, but doesn't it look *good*?"
One of these days I've got to look John up and find out what he's up
to.

Hi Members.
I am looking for information related to "ROMP" a 30x8.4x 18" Ocean
going design by Bolger. Drawings, ideas, experience? Where can I get
some specs? similar but larger designs?
thank you in advance

Thank you Peter:
Like a matter of fact I just hang up after talking with is wife on the phone for over an hour. Great lady from Germany, makes me feel like home (I am originally from Spain).
She mentioned to me a couple of designs that sound extremely interesting although still on the drawing board. a 38 and a 50 footer. I will keep in touch with her because I am very interested.
regards
Tony

This is a fairly non-helpful reply: There was a followup article on
Romp in MAIB some time ago, with a picture or two.

Hi JB!
Thank you for the info regarding the Romp. I would love to be able to contact the builder and chat with him about the sailing characteristics and others. You would not happen to have his name address, phone number etc?
Thank you and regards
