Re: Wire nails & fiberglass

Wire nails? think brads. They come in those little cylindrical plastic
containers. 18 guage is pretty fine and is probably available only in
1/2 to 3/4 inch sizes. They come either with flat heads or with heads
similar to finishing nails.

I've been mulling over the tape thing. I figure that for my Bobcat I
will need about 50 yards; Dynamite says 20#.I'm sure 50 yards of
fibreglass tape doesn't weigh 20#. But then the catalog gives a weight
of 1/2 lb per yard for shipping. That says 25 lbs to me!
I am using 6oz fiberglass cloth which is a medium density fabric. It
should also do for a cartop boat.

Not sure about the exact nail size, but a skinny nail is what you want.
You'll also want a head on it to pull it out later.

6 ounce cloth works very well. Its light enough not to soak up a ton of
resin, but not so tightly woven as four ounce, which I find slow (more
difficult) to wet out. It's also thick enough that you won't sand through
it by mistake -- at least not as easily as with the four.

Cheers,

Subject: [bolger] Wire nails & fiberglass

I'm reading Payson's New Instant Boats book. He talks about 18 guage
wire nails. What exactly is a wire nail? Is it a small-headed
finishing nail or a flat head nail?

Also, my Cartopper plans give dimensions for the fiberglass but I
didn't see any mention of what weight cloth I should use. Any
recommendations? I also thought it was odd that the amount of glass
tape was specified by weight but not length.
