[bolger] Re: Gutambu Ply
I boiled a sample of Gutambu and it delaminated quickly.

This stuff may be the same as the "paraply" or Paraguayan plywood that was
being discussed on the list about a month ago. It also had a "...mambu"
type name of some variety. It was stamped on the ends "interior". I've
soaked a piece of the stuff in my canal for a month (the 3/4" variety) and
it looked fine. Not sure if its the same stuff you're looking at.

A reply to myself:
Although it is called gutambu at Lowe's, the actual name for the wood is
guatambu...but I still can't find much about the plywood product online.

Just came back from the new Lowe's here in South Florida. For $7.87 a
sheet they are selling 6mm (about 1/4 ") Gutambu plywood. It is 5 approx
equal plies and both of the surfaces are excellent, although it is rated as
"shop grade". Here is the kicker...it is not rated as to the glue
specification. So I don't know if it is exterior or interior.
Does anyone have any experience with "Gutambu" in general for small boat
construction and with the Lowe's permutation specifically? Regards, Warren
