Re: [bolger] Re: Epoxy Finish

Scraping epoxy works great. A little heat will soften the resin too. To make a scraper, get any piece of tempered steel about a sixteenth of an inch thick or a bit less, then sharpen it by grinding or filing it FLAT along the edge (in other words at 90 degrees to the face, not at a sharp angle) Scrape by drawing the tool at about 5 or 10 degrees past vertical. Keep the scraper sharp. You can shape the scraper to match the job - curved for fillets, flat for broad surfaces.

I have played with this a little by using a blade from a plane. Seems
to work ok, and gives good results even when the epoxy is still just a
bit soft and would clog sandpaper. I may have to check out the
article, tho generally I have a bad reaction to WB, as the telecom
company I used to work for didn't make us all rich.

Hey, cool idea I never thought of doing that. I agree though bending
tape around a the bend is a pain.

Haven't done much scraping of epoxy, but I have used a block plane to fair
the edge of fibreglass tape set in epoxy. If you get it when its hard but
not brittle, the plane will do a nice job of smoothing off the selvedge of
the tape.

On a related point (rant?) I have found that tape isn't great for smooth
finishes. The selvedge (finished edge) causes it to bump and pucker, as
well as making it hard to wet out smoothly on a curved surface, or around a
corner. When I can, I prefer to cut strips of cloth at an angle to the
weave. These wet out nice and smoothly on almost any surface, and the edges
don't need as much fairing. Cheaper too, just not as convenient for some
jobs.

I just read a article in the Apr 02 WB about finishing epoxy by
scraping it instead of sanding it. This looks very promising; its
fast, safer(dust wise) and apparently better results too. Worth the
read, I highly recomend it.
