Re: stainless screw source

Actualy, the screws I like best are drywall screws, the sharp point
lets you poke it into the wood enough so the screw stays there and
you don't need to hold it to run it it. Haven't seen drywall screws
in stainless...

I don't like regular wood screws, I have issue with them, and don't
like the unthreaded portion on the top. (just being picky I guess)

All in all, Chuck's "sheet metal" screws are a good compromise. Plus,
you can't beat the price.

Only problem I've found with them is that they are Sooooo coarse,
about 1/3 less threads per inch than reg wood screws. In thin stuff,
this sometimes allows the threads to strip out the holes (less turns
in the wood). 1/4" is especially vulnerable, also they like to split
pine alot. Because they go in farther per turn, its easier to split
the wood, hole or no hole. Using hefty screws in hefty stock, they
are great. They _ARE_ Deck screws, after all.

I use them when I can. Bought a couple of 1lb boxes on sale awhile
back for $7 each.

The only length I've found them in 1-5/8". A bit long for what I need
them for.

Suddenly everywhere I look I'm seeing square drive stainless steel
deck screws. In particular, the Despot has them cheap. Seems like
they'd be great for clamping/fastening, then leaving in.

Am I overlooking something?
