Sounds like a good price based on our recent efforts in the New York
City area. We paid $33.60 for 3 ply 1/4" Phillipine Mahogany.Doug Fir
was $36.80
Okume 1/4 five ply was $78 a sheet. I know there are people on the
list with more experience than we have with butt joints. We built a six
hour canoe and used tape joints on each side of 1/4 inch or 5.5mm. I
think this easier and as strong as butt joints with plywood gussetts.
The canoe has stood up to very hard use by teenage boys. It is a very
sharp bend. I did read in some Micro building posts about someone who
used tape joints and ended up with the detail being wrong for some
other construction step because it assumed the thickness of the
gussett. I know that is a little vague. I think it was on the Common
Sense site which has gone off the web.

Good Luck and Best Wishes
Leander
I've used the fiberglass butt joint on 5mm lauan. Still together after much
teenager testing.

Build a test joint with your biaxial tape joints first. Break it and see if
it breaks in the wood or the glass.

Hi all - got my first quote for plywood for Micro. 9 mm (3/8"), 5-plies
marine okoume costs the equivalent of 50 US$ per sheet (4'x8'). The
whole lot would cost about 940 US$ delivered to my address. What do you
guys think?
Another question: do you guys have experience with the fiberglass
splices to butt join plywood panels. What about using 9 oz, 4" biaxial
tape each side of the joint? Best, Pippo
