Re: [bolger] Espar
You might also like to check out Owen Morgan's web site. He has been living
on a yacht in NORWAY for a number of years and has some definite ideas about
heating. There is a section on heating at
http://home.no.net/naomij/livingaboard.html
And his home page is

Mike,
We have an Espar on our 37' Trawler. It has worked well and provided enough heat for winter live aboard in CT winters. I will check to see what model it is if you wish.

You might want to try the Live-Aboard list
(live-aboard-digest@...) for help. There have been
several discussions about heating systems there. We've looked at Espar,
Webasto and Hurricane. The is some anecdotal information about the Espars
being noisy and unreliable. Evidently these were undersized systems used for
live aboard. The hot air systems provide dry air inside, but require a
significant amount of space to run the heating ducts. The hydronic systems
only need two 3/4" heat hoses to run the hot water through the boat, but you
need a radiator to provide the hot air at each end location. More anecdotal
information suggest the Hurricane hydronic system was designed specifically
for marine use and might be better. Still, a system for our 35' boat is
somewhere around $3,000! That has us thinking about a Dickerson propane
heater and sailing south!
