[bolger] Re: Gulp! Weekender?

Hi Mark,
A couple of years ago, I was at the same place that you are now. I
even bought the plans for the Weekender. When all was said and done, I
chose the Micro for the following reasons;
Size and useable space, The Weekender's tiny cubby is sleep only, In
my Micro, I have my bunk, a counter top that is large enough to use as a
chart table, but includes a sink, and stowage equal to 1/3 the entire
Weekender cubby's volume, As well as a porta-potty. Ten gallons of cold
water, and ten gallons of hot water (solar heated)
Self righting and self rescuing; The Micro is, the Weekender is not.
Don't take my word for it, read the various web site stories of knock
downs, on both boats.
And lastly; I love to meet people, Going into a marina for the first
time with a Weekender, you can expect comments like, "Nice looking
boat", from passers by. With the Micro, It's more of a, "What the heck
is that?" and they stay for an explanation, A chance to talk, and issue
a dinner invitation to find out more about the odd little craft. You
will be surprised How quickly the "odd" changes to "Great" as they get
to
understand the reasoning behind the shape and the design.
To sum up; The Micro is the only boat I know of that is bigger on the
inside than it is on the outside, and has the stability of a 25 footer.
My plan is to sail from here, in the center of Missouri, Down river
to the Gulf, then visit friends from Texas to Florida. A trip of
approximately 3000 miles, over a period of 2 or 3 months, in my Micro. A
trip where I admit the accommodations will be Spartan, but in the
Weekender would be a long series of camp outs and stops for
re-supplying.
Just my two cents, Stan of the Snow Goose
mark.... I have not sailed in a weekender... but a person in my sailing club
has built one. the only thing that I can say from seeing this boat is that
it does heel badly... does not point to well and he has capsized it a
couple of times...( might of been his sailing technique too... I don't
know). ( the DNR had to help get him to shore)..... I do agree that it is a
good looking boat ... but I guess that looks aren't everything ......Chris

I would suggest you post your question to rec.boats.building, you would have a better chance of finding someone who has built the Weekender.

I've
debated putting this question in for a while now, but I've decided to

out here and take my lumps if I'm wrong.  Also, it may be the wrong

I'm debating what boat to build for my next project, and am considering
both
Micro and a design called the Weekender (see www.stevproj.com if you
are
unfamiliar with this).  What I'm interested in is any experience
(construction
and sailing - good or bad) with the Weekender since the only info I've
seen on
it is from the company selling the plans.  If anyone has sailed in both
the
Micro and the Weekender I'd love to hear a comparison.

I know the Micro is a far more versatile and adventurous boat, and I
don't
mind it's unusual looks, but I'm drawn by the more traditional styling
(springy sheer and gaff rig) of the Weekender.  Additionally, I don't
really
need the extra boat that the Micro offers since most of the sailing I
will be
doing with the boat is on relatively sheltered waters and is just
daysailing
anyway.  However, I'm not quite ready to give up decent sailing
characteristics for appearances.

I apologise if this is too far off topic.
