[bolger] AS29 and related topics

Hi all
finally found the time to work through last month's messages so here I 'll
try to catch up.

Pippo: you will need about 36 sheets 1500 x 3000. Depends on how you solve
the jig saw puzzle. Better if you can get 1220 x 2440 as they are easier to
work with. When temperatures in my shop fall below freezing point I simply
stop working. After fighting through some winters with my solid fuel stove I
find working with epoxy at temperatures above 10°C more simple and much more
productive. As a side effect I tended to keep doors and windows closed in
winter and so became epoxy sensitized while glueing and sheeting the bottom
of our boat.

Craigh: Thanks for the beautiful images!

Tim: You can make another exhaust outlet above waterline. I once owned a
Yamaha 5hp which had a rubber plug in the side of the prop shaft to which I
connected a heat resistant hose that I led to a small outlet in the
transom. Was a bit noisy but easily removable. Can't say that the gain in
performance was significant. I used this arrangement in first place to keep
the fumes out of the cockpit as the motor was mounted in an ob-well. I
definitely like outboards I can turn 180° most!

Two stroke oil: Here in Germany one can buy oil made from rape seed. Smells
a bit like baking French fries and is more expensive but biodegradable.

Peter: Where on earth did you find those Taunton drawings? I made a COPY and
shall upload to my home page! Had great fun, still makes me laugh! Seems
like an AS29 builder found a designer who was willing to make the drawings
for his intended modifications.

LUNA: Dave & Anke are already living aboard and are busy sewing the junk
sails in the local gym. They are not connected to the WWW but can use the
equipment of their friends from time to time. One can reach them at
davanke@...

Phil & Susanne: Just reread PB&F's version of a remarkable transatlantic
call that took place in spring '99. I shall not comment as I don't want this
discussion group to become some kind of a daily soap. Everybody is free to
send me mail (and some did already) toleo@...and if I feel I should
let the world know about my opinions I shall certainly place them on my
website.

Badger: Pete and Annie Hill are currently building a CATAMARAN in South
Africa.

Mike: Only have experience with the Navik vane gear. Be prepared to steer by
hand in light winds from astern especially with a following sea. In a small
boat as your AS19 when beating in a steep sea at 7 Beaufort under a lee
shore you will soon find yourself steering by hand anyway. If I had to
install a vane gear, I would certainly choose one that could be adjusted
with lines in reach of the cabin. On TWILIGHT I shall use an electronic
autopilot (oversized) which is not in the way of mizzen and outboard.

AS29: Did anyone out there build those hollow aluminum core bilge boards?
Any experiences?

Good luck to you all in 2000,
Leo
