Car On Board

"We hope to explore the Erie and Hudson this way this summer. I'm
thinking of eliminating the front deck completely and adding a garage
& ramp affair to carry a light, compact car that I could load and
unload at any boat ramp."

This idea is not so far fetched to me. In the late '80s a buddy of mine cruised a 55' barge through the canals in Europe with Frau and kinder. Their life got a lot happier when he bought a Duck (ugly compact French car) and loaded it on deck between the fore and aft deck houses. He used two heavy duty planks as I recall to load and unload. (Brave SOB).

Any commercial cargo barge worth a hoot in Europe keeps a car on board and has a deck crane to load and unload it quickly so the crew can moor the barge and drive home on weekends, or go to church, etc. Opel Kadetts and small B'mers are popular for this purpose on the Main and Rhine rivers.
