Re: Queen Mab rig?

Sue,

To answer your first question, the sails of Queen Mab and Peero are
different--not by much, but different. I doubt that Bolger
referred to one when drawing the other; he just likes those
particular proportions and the boats needed about the same sized
sails.

Queen Mab is designed for plywood lapstrake, which is why you may have
thought there was a sheet plywood version. There isn't, and the
strip-plank alternative is not detailed in the plans. Stripping is
easier than lapstrake, but heavier. She will be quite a little handful
to built: eighteen strakes, six frames, a curved transom, etc. etc.
I'm looking forward to getting started, probably this week. It'll
probably take all spring and most of the summer to finish.

It might be interesting match racing a Peero against a Queen Mab.
Peero has the greater waterline length, but QM has more stability. Of
course, if appearance is factored into the meet, the humble pirogue
wouldn't have a chance,

Paradox? Wouldn't one do? I assume the I60 can go on a mooring.

(Didn't see Paradox in database. Curious)

Well, I would, if I actually had plans for one. I've got all
this shiny new shop equipment, see, and an enforced wait until
at least August or September or so. And the last two books
that I read were _River Horse_ and _Swallows and Amazons_....

Queen Mab has far too many curves to be built of sheet ply. I
think PCB had strip, cold molding or lapstrake ply in mind. At
least I think QMs have been built by these methods.

Thomas Firth Jones has a couple of similar "sitzbath" size
designs, one a garvey and the other double-chined. Both of
these are designed for sheet ply construction.

But stop looking at little boats and go build I60.

Okay, so I probably should've checked the archives first. :-) Wow,
she's a pretty little thing; looks like the _Swallow_ or _Amazon_
at 1/2 scale. The "Amazon-looking" one in the files looks very
different than the "Swallow-looking" one on Mike's page; are there
different options for building from sheet plywood vs. glued lapstrake?

And I notice that QM is design #638, where the 12' Peero is #637,
which makes me suspect all the more that the rigs are the same.
Hmm....

I'm looking at the photo of the Queen Mab on Mike Stockstill's
web site, and it looks like she has a cute little gaff cat rig
of around 30 sq. ft. or so. Is this the same 30 sq. ft. gaff
cat rig that's used on the 12' Sailing Pierogue?

(and has anyone here ever built one?)
