Re: First Epoxy of the Season

That's good news. I just put my first epoxy on my $200 sailboat and
it's supposed to get a little chilly tonight. It should warm to the
mid 50s for the next two days, so maybe I can move it on Saturday.

I have been banished from working in the garage on my bastard
Kotick. My Raka 127 resin with non-blushing 350 hardener in the back
yard is exposed to the elements [55 deg. F.] has taken up to three
days to cure. [which makes for slow going] I've had uncured epoxy
rained on several times. It turns a little milky white, but recovers
a clear color with no apparent problems after a few days.

Encouraged by this, I used glass and epoxy to repair the inside of
the cracked leaking ancient utility sink into which my washing
machine discharges waste water. That epoxy cured, under repeated
full submersions of hot soapy water.

There *is* a problem with dirt and bugs sticking to the epoxy on my
bastard Kotick while it slowly cures outdoors.
It does matter, or at least it leaves marks you can see. I can't quite
visualise what you're working on, but if you can cover it up with
polyethylene it ought to be ok. Polyethylene won't stick to it
either. ANd of course heat will make it set off much faster. I suspect
if you'd used Raka fast hardener it would be set overnight.

Well it still hasn't gelled yet, but this afternoon I mixed and
poured my first epoxy of 2002. What a feeling!

I didn't have a router when I was making the opening for the
daggerboard case on the LSME so the fit was only as good as I could
make it with a jigsaw, which was none to good.

Got in today with a router, trimmed it up, eased the edge, then laid
on some glass to protect the edge of the plywood. What a satisfying
feeling. Of course it's not mid Summer and the goo is taking it's
sweet time to set up. Doesn't matter if it rains on it before it's
set, does it?

YIBB,

David
