[bolger] Clever solution needed to tall skinny pro
BO>Dear Bolgerites,
BO>While everyone else is busy building boats, or modifying the ones they
BO>already built or designing new boats to build in the future, I am stuck on
BO>Boat Building 101. <snip>
BO>Does anybody have a simple solution to making a 16' mast stiff enough to be
BO>freestanding that does not take a great deal of skill (by a great deal of
BO>skill I mean things like creating an eight sided scriber and so on...)
BO>Mike Masten
Mike, boatbuilding needs =courage=. The eight-sided-scriber and similar
things are all achievable, by those of us with no skills (to begin
with). You develop the skills by doing.
I too was terrified out of my tiny brain at the making of a 14 (?) ft
mast for the Nymph, which also tapers to 1 inch square, but it got done
in the end (and in the process, my discovery of the drawknife terrified
the rest of the family out of their tiny brains...)
Those of us who casually drop reams of boat names we have built/are
building/could build if we so desired, also went through the
aaarrrgghhhh! stage.
One useful hint: any errors you make will only be visible to others if
you draw their attention to it.
Follow Payson's instructions, including making the spar gauge.
