Re: Building Gypsy - week 2

Thanks Chuck for the hatch closure idea. I like the idea of internal
bungees as they don't show and also neatly solve the problem of hatch
retention. I have the idea that one end of the bungee could be
detachable to allow the hatch to be moved completely out of the way.

And thank you, Thomas. I'm not sure why I thought I had to let the
fillet set up before taping, but it makes a lot of sense to do it all
in one go as you describe. I would guess that one could use his/her
filleting tool to smooth out the tape after laying it on the joint.

I wish you fair breezes and clear skies,

Paul

Sounds as though you let the putty harden before
taping. It is best if it is just one continuous
lay-up. Putty holes and cracks, don't worry at all if
the goo is a little proud. Apply cloth over that,
then several layers of tape, in declining sizes, say
6", 4", 3". then fair in the tape with 410, then
coat. The hole thing can be done in one go, or until
you loose strength. Obviously what of all these glass
layers one uses will depend on the actual scantlings
of the craft. Idealy (this has only once been my lot)
if the craft is so big you can't get all that done as
described, then you have enough hands that you can. I
have done hulls up to about 24' single handed, with a
mixer.

Paul:

I have done small hatches like this with a bungee cord from the back of the
hatch to a point behind it. You just pull the cover away from the bulkhead
or deck to open the hatch, then let go, and it closes. This limits what you
can stow, but it looks neat from the outside, and it is easy to do.

1. I am going to build two 1' square hatches and would like
suggestions on what kind of closure to use. What immediately comes to
mind is a bungee cord as I have seen used on kayaks. Does anyone have
a more elegant, but still simple method?

2. Am I half done?

Cheers,

Paul
Filled all the hull seams from the outside and then taped them. Glued
up the daggerboard, rudder parts, and mast. Turned the boat over and
removed molds 9 and 12. Made frame 13 and installed it in the hull.
Filleted and taped all the inside seams. Installed temporary
spreaders where molds 9 and 12 had been to maintain hull shape.
Started making the deck framing. Ordered plans for 17' 1" Charles
Wittholz catboat. (I have this disease bad.)

Notes:

Filleting and taping went well, but is very tedious and time-
consuming. Neatness counts! I had to chip off some little blobs of
putty whilst laying the tape – I will be more thorough in cleaning up
next time.

I glued up the daggerboard, upper rudder and lower rudder all at once
and clamped them altogether on a strongback because the plywood was
not anywhere near flat. They all came out well.

I glued up the mast blank from four pieces of 1 5/16" square Douglas
Fir. I put the worst imperfections on the inside. It came out quite
straight – maybe a ¼" bend maximum.

Two questions:

1. I am going to build two 1' square hatches and would like
suggestions on what kind of closure to use. What immediately comes to
mind is a bungee cord as I have seen used on kayaks. Does anyone have
a more elegant, but still simple method?

2. Am I half done?
