...illegal immigrant... Just now on Spanish TV: 10 subsaharian
drowned in the Canary Islands coast. They embark daily by the
hundreds from Africa to Europe in fragile flatties with half dead
outboards, trying to cross the Gibraltar Strait and its currents and
winds, or from Senegal or Mauritania to Canary Is. Are they crazy?

Or this is not a fair world, or what?

BTW I'm for the Tahiti with the Deutz. They are just incredible
motors. And the Tahiti would be perfect as a 50/50 motor sailer.
Don't you think?

Assuming, arguendo, that the drowning of a hypothetical cave man who
over-estimated his and/or his log's capability somehow contributed to a
better way of life for those that didn't join him on his fatal journey, would
the drowning of a 21st Century recreational sailor have an equivalent
enhancement to the life of his survivors in this century?

If not, why the insouciance about this prospective sailor's possible demise
for want of a more suitable craft, adequate flotation, communications, trip
plan, etc.?

Dear Fader,
I thought the discussion was about a suitable sailing craft not
about drowning nor commiting suicide in a creative way.

Also instead of thinking of 100 different ways to modify Surf so
it "might work" why not suggest a better design, which is what the
original question was about, or so I thought?

Here are some other suggestions based on more knowledge of what the
seven miles might intail. Kotick would probably work. (No sail
though) Pirogue would work, small sail. And one I really like is
Rueban's Nymph which I would guess is far more seaworthy than any of
the small flat bottomed boats. These are all cartoppable. Ready made
boats would be a Folbot and a commercial sailboard. My 18 foot
Clipper Canoe could do it with experienced paddlers. This also
applies to a sea kayak, not for the novice.

Probably the most seaworthy for it's size would be Oldshoe. Notice I
am not talking safety anymore, just seaworthiness;-))

Boats like Surf and other flat bottoms - can be very difficult to
handle in big waves because of a tendency to tip when they broach.
Then they fill with water.

Therefor it would not be my first choice even though I have one - and
could probably make it there with one.

Nels,
Do you think he wants to live forever? Better he takes some risks than dying
never having lived. Bolger himself noted that our society has a morbid fear
of death. It certainly isn't a healthy attitude.

Security is the proper concern of slaves and children. Men should choose to
concern themselves with freedom above all.

Horn Island *is* in protected waters. Doing something that is a calculated
risk, after taking due precautions, isn't stupid. Were it not for such deeds,
we would still be living in caves.

Lighten up and live a little :-)
