Re: [bolger] vacuum disc sander

I've got the random orbital Porter Cable also, and agree that its a great
tool! Yup, also have it patched into a longer hoseset to roam more widely
in the shop. The vac hose hookup keeps the dust way down, but there is
still some dust, so you still have to be careful. In addition to an
appropriate mask, I always sand with a 20 inch window fan going full bore
out the shop window for cross ventilation, and keep on the upwind side in
the clean air coming in thru an open door when taking breaks. The sander
vac exhausts its residual dust right in front of the fan so the dust goes
outside immediately. I get very little dust staying in the shop this way.
Cheap dust control, but very effective.

By disc, do you mean ROS? I have two of those, the
angled Portercable with a variable speed, great tool
nice flexible hose attachment, will go from light
grinding to polishing. I also have a Dewalt pad
sander type Ros, also variable. It doesn't have the
power to do real cuting like the larger PC, but is a
nice tool. I had to work to find a combination of
hose transitions that is capable of attaching this one
to my vac, using a standard hose. It actualy
self-extracts into a filter bag rather nicely, without
vac. I use the cheappest QSP Shop-vac with goretex
filter for my vac, a very quiet and efficient set-up.
The big issue is what you expect this to do for you.
I would be leary anbout grinding in tight quarters
even with his rig. I still think you are going to end
up eating higly toxic dust. Not much will come
through the vac with goretex filter, but not all will
be picked up either.
