[bolger] Re: web site, sternwheelers, off on a tangent

Carter, Thanks,
Now all I need is a 900 HP engine, and I'll be all set. As a kid, I used
to ride the Day Liners on the Hudson River, (more than 50 years ago)
but, I am sorry to say, I didn't pay attention to the details.

I am familiar with one sternwheeler, the Portland, of Portland, Oregon.
Her wheel is 25" in diameter on a 219" hull, so it is just over 10% of
her overall length. But then she is a tug. From looking at picutures of
old boats, I see that passenger and freight boats had smaller wheels in
proportion the their length, but just how big I don't know.

On the Portland, the buckets (paddles) are two 2x12s, I think, so that
makes them 24" wide, just under 10% of the wheel diameter. At rest they
are submerged by a few inches, as I recall.

On the diesel-electric sternwheeler Columbia Gorge, when the captain
wanted more speed he asked the passengers to move forward, leading me
to the conclusion that too much immersion hurts speed.

For more on the Portland, see

Bruce & Chuck,
Thank Heaven for good lists, with good people, that give great help.
I thought I knew my way around the web, but I have had no luck at all,
finding the information I needed on paddle wheels. The sites you found
are fantastic. Now all I have to do is to combine this new information
with something like Bolger's Canal Cruiser, And I will have my river
boat. I cannot thank you enough for your help.

PS; I wonder, a paddle wheel on a Micro? Hmmmmmm... ;-)
Stan:

I just found something on stern wheelers:

I don't know if this will help or not, but it can't hurt.

Stan,
I've found two sites you might want to try,
Sternwheel Riverboat Harbor
www.wirefire.com/gemort/harbor/HARBOR.htm
The American Sternwheel Association
www.coe.wvu.edu/~venable/asa/asa-home.htm

Sternwheel Riverboat Harbor is dedicated to
building your own riverboat. Parts are still
"under construction", but the paddle wheel and
engine sections are "done".

Hi All, I have added some more pictures to the web page showing more of
the cabin interior. Hopefully, more to come but till then please feel
free to email and helpful comments and suggestions. I need all the help
I can get.
On the subject of help, I have been thinking of my next boat, (if I
survive this one) and am leaning toward a Micro Trawler having been
further inspired by George Shannon's article in "Duckworks Magazine".
Now for the question; I have hunted high and low on the internet and
elsewhere for any design formulas for paddle wheels, all to no avail.
Can anyone lead me in the right direction to find any information on
paddle wheel design? i.e.: Whetted area, Slippage, HP to displacement,
etc.? There is plenty of information for propellers, but nothing, that I
can find, for paddle wheels.
Thanks all, Stan, Snow Goose
