Re: [bolger] Vacuum bagging

As I have mentioned earlier, you can bag as you
mention, but be sure to include the equivalent of 4 x
1/4" holes in your hose to keep air cooling the motor.
A more scientific method is to just keep drilling
holes while watching a vaccum guage, until the
pressure starts to drop appreciably. I know the 4
holes are great for the small shop vacs.

Also, understand the SV is fine for cloth, and ply,
and scarphs. It often will fail to bag veneer, where
even quite compliant sheets may have local points the
SV can't compress. Birdseye is an extreme example of
this. It won't work generally with white and yellow
glues of a type that require high pressure levels. If
you bag something like a curved deck, be sure to let
the material run beyond the imediate perimeter. The
clamping is lowest at edges. You could finess this
with something like slightly thickened epoxy towards
the edges, but just planing for overhang is easier. I
think the SV is actualy superior to other alternative
in situations where the extra pressure isn't required.
It empties bags, and has plenty of force for certain
functions. When I layed up the 24' panels of my tri,
it crushed them down like nothing. I figured the
larger the panel, the larger the vaccum you would
need. Well other than a situation where you might
need to overcome cumulative leaks you could bag panels
a mile long with a simple SV. the clamping pressure
of the SV isn't the issue, the clamping pressure comes
from the earth's atmosphere, the vac just empties the
bag. The power of the motor is only relevant as
relates to its ability to move enough air out, and to
create a sufficient difference in pressure in the
apperature accross which the air is moving.

If nothing else you will develop a whole new
technology for crushing beer cans.

The recent references to vacuum bagging have piqued my interest.

Internet research shows you can vacuum bag with nothing more than strip caulking, clear plastic, and a shop vac.

Verrrry interesssting. Next piece of ply I splice or laminate will be shop-vacuumed.

Any of you experts out there want to contribute your two cents?
