Finding MDO

There is a difference between what a local lumber yard "carries", and
what it can get for you as a special order.

I live in a small northern Michigan town. My local lumber company in a
neighboring small town carries a few sheets of 1/2 most of the time.
Since I needed more than 70 sheets, I had the contractor sales rep
special order it for me.

I have all too often run into retail counter staff at lumber yards who
are clueless. I seek out the experienced outside sales reps who sell to
contractors out on the job site. These people are usually accustomed to
tracking down materials that the counter people may not know even
exists.

Any lumber yard can get MDO in various finishes and thicknesses through
their distributors if (BIG IF) they want to take the trouble. I see MDO
used all the time around here in commercial construction. A recent
example was decorative cladding of outdoor steel support columns holding
up the roof of a church porch.

I paid $38 a sheet for single sided 1/2", $42 for double sided, $32 for
3/8 single sided.

Re: the question about removing paper. If you are laminating layers of
ply, or joining pieces (i.e. bulkheads to cabin sides) leave the paper
on. If you are butt splicing sheets end to end with glass tape, then
remove material from both sheets to allow the tape to be flush with the
rest of the surface.
