Oh boy, is it! The poster-boy for the opposition to revised river-flow
management plan is a Missouri corn farmer, growing subsidized corn (maize)
for an artificially created market (fructose & ethanol, etc.) on former flood
plain forcibly seized from the aborigines at tax-payers expense and rendered
reliably arable by of the Corps of Engineers' discredited booddoggle of a
waterway management scheme, but, By God!, he paid good money for that land
and no pointy-headed government scientists are going to interfere with his
unfettered use of it!

The Mpls Stribune recently ran a story, without any indication that irony was
intended, in which it quoted a farm lobbyist to the effect that "farm
subsidies are needed to preserve the independence of our farmers"!

My goodness, I'm ranting already and (Christian) sabbath hasn't even ended
yet! TIme for bed!

Ciao for Niao,

I only know the modern Missouri from Least Heat-Moon. This tale is relevant to rivers all
across the country, though.
