He He,
OK you've convinced me!
I'm going to rig my boat with galvanized wire, served with hemp!
(That's pretty open statement I suppose)

You might check out Brion Toss at

\and see if he can recommend a source.
My latest Boats and Harbors a sort of maritime Trade a Plane, had
several sources, a quick search of the house has it turning up missing,
I will reveal these sources when the magazine is revealed or the next

At Lunenburg N.S., from the dock I got to watch some youngster on the
ROSE hanging in a boatswains chair from the outer stay of her
bowsprit. He had a bucket of tar and was applying it to the the stay
from which we was hanging. He would spread a little and move his own
chair up the stay -- of course it was closer to horizontal than
vertical. There was forward of a large spreader that put him out
over the wharf. Very cool.

It is less elastic and more fatigue-resistant than any alloy, at one-
third the cost. The sole drawback is that it requires maintenance...
I've seen 20-, 40-, 50-year old rigs in perfect condition.
and
The oldest rigging afloat is not stainless steel, which has a
lifespan limited by fatigue, but parceled and served galvanized wire,
which is less susceptible to fatigue and can be completely sealed
from rust.
and
If served galvanized rigging is slushe dwhenever it gets looking dry,
it will last for a century or more.

They say Spectra creeps under load. Not exactly what you'd want in
rigging, tho if you're going to have TCP in your rigging Spectra cloth
might be nice for catching bullets (I won't say whose, use your
imagination and politics). For rigging, I'd guess Kevlar would be much
better.
Instead of hemp, why not use something conventional, then put a small
weight and parachute at your masthead. You can make up for the other
difference by hitting yourself on the head with an old fashioned
lignum vitae mallet!
I've heard recommendations for galvanised wire as an inexpensive
alternative to stainless before.
Right now, I hate rigging after helping my friend with his trailer
boat. If you're going to use advanced composites, how about a stayless
carbon mast? You can paint it to look like wood. Everyone will be
amazed as you heft it yourself.

Yeah, Spectra's good stuff but I don't think you would want to use it
for shrouds and it's hard to keep lit anyway.

using galvanised wire rigging, served and tarred. The wire is
stronger than stainless, and will last a lifetime if properly cared
for.

I've been thinking about rigging lately remembering my old sailing
mentor who had a yar vessel, a 40' homebuilt staysail schooner with a
great aft cabin, The Christian Rose.
All the standing rigging was tarred hemp recycled from a
decommissioned Navy vessel .
I did some research on the stuff and have found several sites that
sell hemp rope and tarred hemp twine.
This one sells the widest variety of hemp ropes at the best prices,
up to 2 3/8 diameter hawsers. (That should hold those micros)

This one sells tarred hemp twine
http://www.poly.se/english/produkter/produkt-meny-10.htm
So for all the saltier than thou crowd, or for those who just want
some rope that will outlast your boat, check these out.
Does anyone know the process for tarring hemp rope? (not smoking
it) :- )
Thanks
