From my experience anyway, you can cut very nice curves with a Skil saw. I
use a thin plywood blade. It has a lot of small teeth with a small offset
and is sold as a cabinet grade blade. Go slow and it seems to work well
enough.

I've done a lot of cutting on the Meranti plywood I have which is in the
same family as Luan and the power planer will splinter it up but the Skil
saw with the fine tooth plywood blade makes a very smooth cut with no
splinters.
