Re: [bolger]

I have to confess, however, that I am an
approach-the-line kind of guy, and usualy end up going
the last thou. by hand. Given that, I have used the
Bosch jigsaw most often, it is handier, and Bolger
aside, boats often have tight curves that the circ.
can't get to.

But, why not use a jigsaw?

It is far easier to cut a fair curve with a circular saw than it is
with a jigsaw.

I have never been able to control slivering while cutting luan with
either a skilsaw or a jig saw, but using a fine tooth Japanese pull
saw works great and is just as quick as using a power tool.

One should always lift the blade of your skillsaw
so that the teeth are bearly visible from below.
This will give you not only a nicer cut, but will also
make it easier to follow a curved line.

But, why not use a jigsaw?

Have been using luaun ply for a few boats, such as the Elegant Punt, and now
the June Bug.

I appreciate the low cost of the material, but I have a few
observations/questions:

The wood seems to have almost a gloss which makes it sometimes difficult to
use pencil for marking, and to see the marks after they are made.

Surface sems almost brittle when cutting and prone to slivering.

I need some suggestions on sawing to a curved line using a 7" skilsaw. Will
the 7" skilsaw blade make the curve easily? I usually end up doing a lot of
sanding after the fact. Perhaps the answer for this one is to build the
Teal and Zephyr whose sides have no curvature.

Would appreciate some practical onbservations on the use and working of
Luaus ply. Thx.
