I wound up taking film cameras along, rather than my digital
camera, so it'll be a few days before I get the photos back for
posting. David took some digital photos, though, which he was
making noises about trying to post quickly. I'll take a few
shots of mine with my digital camera tonight, and upload them
tomorrow.

David's friend Nick bailed on us, so we only built two boats.
But the "boatmaker" worked well, once we got it assembled, and
my hull looks to be entirely twist-free, which isn't something
that I could say about my previous stitch-and-glue efforts.

If the temperature had been ten degrees warmer, we could probably
have gotten both boats just about finished. As it is, I still
need to shape the sculling notch, install the rowlocks and foot
braces, glass the bottom, and attach the gunwales, then sand,
fair, and paint. David's is upside down on the jig with a layer
of glass curing on the bottom; he has his entire interior to still
do. But they're both definitely boats, rather than random
collections of plywood scraps.

Bottom line: it was a lot of fun. And David's little daughter is
infinitely adorable. And I'm very excited about building a big
schooner.

Yes, I concur! A photo expose of your endeavor will be very helpful
regardless of the end use of the dories. I have built wood boats with
and without the use of a jig and I would like to see how you quickly
build these three boats. I live on the banks of the largest
freshwater lake west of the Rockies and the people here are oblivious
to the sleek lines and wonderful rowing characteristics of the dory.

The most common boat of these parts are the aluminum drift boats that
row fine in fast water but posses far too much rocker to make
comfortable long lake rowing ventures. So please show us both your
successes and problems you encounter. I would like to build a few
myself and knowing the pitfalls to avoid makes the experience much
better. My last boat I built was a kit from Greg Tatman a 16' drift
boat,http://www.gregboats.com/

My thoughts are that one of the big dories would look very nice on
the deck a bolger Illinois. The problem now is convincing my wife
that it is a practical pursuit of my time and effort.

Heh. If the jig is halfway assembled, the side panels are halfway
pre-cut, so I guess we're in about the same state. I may need to
leave a bit later than I'd originally planned, to allow time to
finish cutting out the panels, actually....

And all this because Massachusetts fisherpeople are being asked to limit
their catches to slow depletion of the stock?

Let me see if I understand. First you build these dorys. Then you
build a couple of schooners. Then you press some sailors and sail out
the Grand Banks to do a little fishing.....

FBBB --

Over this weekend, Sue is going to drive down from Rochester and
we're going to try to build 3 Light Dory hulls over the Memorial Day
weekend. Sue's bringing pre-cut side panels, and I've got the jig
(halfway) assembled.

Standby for photos!
