[bolger] Re: Again on cold poured keels
Seventy-five cents a pound!!!? I get lead scrap from the junk dealer--er, recycling specialist--in Oneonta for twenty cents a pound. My Scottish blood could not stand to part with near four times as much. Seems to me you could find a foundry to do the job proper and haul the keel home yourself on a light trailer (such as the one you'll plant the Micro on) for less than that. But I don't know about Italy (or much of anything else, for that matter)...

Hi,
You can buy lead sheet from any large wholesale plumbing supply company.
Also should be able to buy it from a roofing company. It is used
for
flashing materiel around roof openings. You should be able to
buy it for
around .75 cents per pound.

Greetings. I've cast many tens of thousands of bullets over the years and
am not terribly bothered by the process. If you go ahead with it, make
certain you have very good ventilation, and leather protective clothing.
The mold can be made from 2 by stock or doubled 3/4 " plywood. With
planning ( I have'nt gotten that far) the mold should be able to be
incorporated into the final structure.

I have an ongoing project collecting wheelweights from garages in small
towns. In the cities the weights are recycled. In the towns and villages
they often aren't. It doesn't take long to collect 400 lbs. Shooting
ranges will often cut you a deal, but you need to cull jacked from lead
projectiles.

the problem around here in Europe is that lead is being considered a
dangerous metal, so it's less and less used in home construction. I
actually think it's forbidden in plumbing, roof work and whatever else.
I've been performing a wide angle search, and have been successfull with
a scrap metal dealer (he knows he has the material but has not yet been
able to find it) and with a radiators repair shop.

You can buy lead sheet from any large wholesale plumbing supply company.
Also should be able to buy it from a roofing company. It is used for
flashing materiel around roof openings. You should be able to buy it for
around .75 cents per pound.

about.
More generally, though, I investigated the issue but it appears to me
that lead shot is far too expensive around here (luckily enough, I might
add, because the hunters in Italy have killed almost all the vertebrates
in the country).
I understand though that one can locate lead in sheets (like the ones
used for shielding X-ray rooms), which is going to be, in my opinion,
the easiest possible way to build the Micro's keel...
