Sorry,but I'm a Micrologist ;-),however I'll hazard a stab at your
question by guessing that either the lid for the slot serves to lock
the mast in place or perhaps a metal gate,secured to the slot
cleats/framing stock,drops in behind the mast.
There really should be a "Trivial Pursuits" board game just for
boaters with special editions for designers of repute.Bolger maniacs
would,of course,would have the most fun!
