Re: seven sheets, or nine...
Just a guess here... If the boat has headsails, you have 2 sheets per
sail. One for Port, one for Starboard.

sail. One for Port, one for Starboard.

"What am I missing here?"
I think that it may be those three sheets that are flappin in the
wind that the person who counted was experiencing.
I think that it may be those three sheets that are flappin in the
wind that the person who counted was experiencing.

Well, once again PCB floats a boat
design which catches my imagination,
Try as I might, I can't count the
"seven sheets, or nine" that he
writes about in the latest issue
of Messin' About in Boats.
What am I missing here, I count
four sails plus two. ...four or
six sheets. How does he count
seven or nine?
Maybe I don't understand the proper
definion of "sheet". I thought a
sheet was 'a rope which controls
the angle of a sail to the wind'.
Usually attached to the clew, or
to the boom of the sail. One sheet
per sail usually, except maybe for
junk rigs which have a sheet for
each batten, etc...
The main and mizzen masts have stays
which would need to be handled when
tacking, [I think], but those lines
wouldn't be 'sheets' per se, and
they don't add up to seven or nine.
