Re: Couple of new Micro pics
No, rolling swell would not seem to be to bad but. I have seen really
steep and very close 2to 3 foot chop everytime the wind kicks up
above 15knots where I kitesurf and where I would be taking my micro.
Seems to me the bow of the boat would be lifting and falling into the
next trough over and over again pounding the hole way somthing is
bound to give!?
There are alot of hidden objects just under the suface here too.
I have come close to getting impaled by a 4'' in diameter tree branch.
I have also seen 2x4 2x6 4x4s floating around out there with nails
and bolts sticking out through the wood.
No containers as of yet But I have heard there out there. The
container ships are always buzzing by.
I do have the recommend foam floatation on board my micro. Might be
adding some more in the way of insulation 1'' thick panels on the
walls and ceiling covered by some nice wood. I haven't figured it all
out. Tring to focus on refinishing the outer hull for now.

I Have never sailed the channel islands. I have heard, thats where
whity goes to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Sounds like we should get a buffet of boats together and plan a trip.
I'm getting hungry , I'm going to go eat some waffles and then go
sailing.

In fact I think it would be pretty hard to majorly damage a Micro
hull sailing in waves, simply because she is so light. Waves tend to
push her aside or lift her, not like a heavy keelboat which will
thump on through.
The main risk is hitting a solid object, or a solid object hitting
you, and 6mm ply doesn't take kindly to a point impact.

And my hand held VHF...
I have sailed from Channel Islands Harbor to Avalon in a 16 FT
version of a laser. There were a bunch of us, and sag wagons
(stinkpots) following so it wasn't that daring...
I would like to trailer my lightning up there this summer and camp
cruise some of the Islands. I think it would be much safer to get a
few boats together for the trip.

The last time I did something like that was on a plywood Malibu
outrigger that lost it's rudder (fell off), just a few miles south
of where you are, off Zuma, out a couple of miles.
We steered by bending the mast fore and aft. It worked!

UHHH...I got it.
Well when I gain more confidence in the hull and put it through the
riggors of all conditions around here I plan On doing the trip In my
micro. Its not rigged for lights and does not have a radio as of yet.
I did not build the hull so as far as I know it will fall apart
beating to weather in a a steady 18knots with a 2to 3 foot swell.
Wanna go with ? Come on down if you want to help work the bugs out.
I'm pretty sure I could do damage to the hull, pushing it to hard. I
Just wanna know how hard I can sail her before she breaks apart.
I was out today in a steady 19 with some stronger gusts to 24 . It
was pretty nasty on the outer bay and I was kitesurfing! Seemed to
smooth out past the breakwater though.

I've never made the Channel Islands run, mostly the Catalina run,
and you are right, it can get bumpy out there, plus the shipping
lanes can be really exciting on night sails, along with the sharks,
the practically guaranteed afternoon fog and the cigarette boats
blowing it out, he, he.
I was wondering because of those things. I would never recommend
that a novice in a flat-bottomed Bolger boat attempt that crossing.
As you well know, they are NOT protected waters by any stretch of
the imagination.
Cheers

Hi Todd,
Uhhh . . what boat do you plan to do the Catalina run with? The bulk
of my sailing has been in those waters, from LA harbor to MDR up to
Ventura.

emm. If you keep the boat on a mooring or slip, you will wind up sailing the
same stretch of water all the time. Will get boring, I would think.
Might be better to work on your trailing procecures, and get the loading and
unloading time down sub 15 minutes or so, then you can sail anywhere you can
drive to.
Friend has a 25ft Catalina, takes him more time to get the boat ready to
sail from the mooring than it did to launch my AF2 from the trailer.

Hi Dan,
The launching problems were more my fear than anything. To float her
off, the water has to be just over the rear support on the trailer
and almost to top of the foward support. I have no problem at my
shallow launching ramp high or low tide now.I also added an 8''
roller on the middle frame of the trailer to help support the keel
and to ad in launching and load of the boat. I will add another
roller on the back of the trailer to replace the block of wood with
carpet on it.
I beach her in about knee deep water. Its not so bad. Just keep an I
on the tide it seems to change quick around here and all most got her
stuck on the beach. Just from pulling my truck up, parking and
fiddleing with a few things. Went to shove off and couldn't , with
out some real muscle.
She sails wonderfully been playing with the mizzen to steer leaving
the tiller in the centered position. Pure joy to sail.
She is deffinately a small big boat.
Now if I can just find a cheap slip or a mooring to keep her in. I
could get even more time on the water with here.
The rigging and derigging ever other day is becoming a drag.

A beautiful day sailing. Just one hitch the beach I launch from had
An on shore breeze. I pushed off as far and as deep as from the
beach as possible and spun the bow into the wind and jumped aboard.
It was to close for comfort but i made it barely. I was by myself . I
can rig, launch, sail beach derig and reload onto trailer all by my
self. Second time out by myself and it just gets easier everytime.
Takes me about 20 min to rig and get into the water which I think it
isn't so bad. About another 10 15 min. when by myself. The family is
going tomorrow.
Here's a few shots of my micro on the trailer and a couple in the
water.
