Re: More Gullapalooza Photos

David,

Yes I have fished the Williamson and with a Greg Tatman drift boat
kit I built. There are huge moss backed brown trout lurking in the
big holes of that river. Also the Sprague that flows into the
Williamson but its waters are a bit murky.

The Gull has the advantage for rowing over the drift boat because it
doesn't have the same over exaggerated rocker like its cousin the
drift boat. Rowing a drift boat on the lake would be akin to rowing a
Bolger Brick since the bow and stern never touch the water with a
normal load. Great for fast white water fishing though(not the brick).

Remember your PFD when you attack the breakers at Ditch Plains. I
never took the drift boat to the ocean but I have rowed some big
white water on the Rogue river. There is nothing that compares to a
smoked Rouge River Chinook that you've killed in your own boat.

Hey, wow, that looks like a boat. :-) Much more so than mine; I'm
still waiting for my Raka order to show up. Has the boat been off
the "boatmaker" yet, or do you still have the inside to do?

Every time the Wagner commercial comes on the TV, my wife says
"Should we get one of those?" I guess next time I'll answer "Yes, yes
we should."

I graduated from Ashland high school and tied into more than one of
those big fat Klamath Lake fish trolling spinners near Rocky Point.
Always meant to explore the canoe trails there, but never quite got
around to it. Do you ever fish the Williamson?

Don't be envious about the Gull. It was neither expensive, nor
difficult, nor time consuming to build. No reason you shouldn't have
one of your own!

David,

Your painting does not need new brushes. What you really need is a
Wagner airless paint sprayer. No, I'm not a purist painter but I feel
the ends justify the means when it comes to painting. The learning
curve with the airless sprayer lets even a novice have professional
results unlike mastering brush techniques. Besides after buying a few
high quality brushes you could afford the airless.

On the same note, in the photos the boat still looks great and I'm
extremely envious. It would be a perfect boat for fishing the trophy
rainbows in Klamath Lake.

It doesn't look quite so slutty (too bad) when it dries.

FBBB --

Well there's a window in the bad weather, so I got outside this
morning and slapped some paint on my Gull. Now that it's got a coat
of paint, it's got a name too -- "Toby" after my wife's foul tempered
red tabby cat.

My carpentry and glass work as gotten good enough that they really
are starting to show what a crappy painter I am. I can't say that I'm
happy with the paint job, but at least the epoxy is protected from
the sun. Toby also marks the end of my gallon of Redwood Red Benjamin
Moore Porch Paint. I painted my Teal three times, my Scooner twice,
and got one thick (if ugly) coat of paint on my Gull. Not a bad value
for a $30 bucket of paint!

I also tried gasoline for brush clean up. Much faster/better/cheaper
than thinner. I think Payson mentions this in one of his books. Maybe
now that I know I can keep them nice, I'll go invest in a few Purdy
brushes and see if I can't bring my painting up a notch.

Hopefully the next photos up will be me pulling through the breakers
at Ditch Plains!
