Anyone designed a lateener?
Hi list,
I've been looking at changing the rig on my Michalak Scram Pram to a
loose-footed lateen. She is designed as a lugger with a boomed balance lug.
Design sail area is 187 ft^2, but that is on the large side for this boat.
I've drawn it up and it looks really good. I can get good leads in a 166 ft^2
loose-footed sail with a 11'8" mast and a 25'6" yard. CLA is dead on that of
the original sail plan.
I'm really giving serious consideration to this; I still have three things to
work out. If anyone has comments or references, I'd appreciate hearing about
them.
1. Mast diameter (bury is same as original, but with step moved back into
cabin to allow for'd drift of mast). Might try to find a Fraser fir standing
dead; the beetles are killing them by the hundreds in East TN.
2. How to broadseam a lateen. Be nice if it could be done like Michalak's
"geometric" solution for a lugsail.
3. How to design and build the yard. I've read everything Bolger has written
on the lateen in 100 SBRigs and his Pirate Racer article. All I've really
gotten from that is that the yard can be "very light" as the bendiness works
to flatten the sail in a hard blow. I'm thinking of using 2) spruce 2x4s one
20' and one 14' long, overlapping all the extra and making that overlap into
a bolted-up scarph (near 8:1) so I can disassemble the yard for storage.
Anyone have any wisdom on the topic? Websites with lateen info? Any place
else I should post this?
Cheers/Carron
Should make a pretty sight out on the water :-)
