I know it is a cause with little prospect of success in my lifetime, but I
would like to take this opportunity to advocate an esthetic tax/subsidy on
boats. A boat like a "Glouchester Gull" adds esthetic interest to the waters
where it operates. It would be suitable, I think, that the operators of such
vessels be greeted on landing by maidens toting Fortnum & Mason picnic
baskets, at the expense of operators of Bayliners and other first draft
mock-ups for the next "Star Wars" pre-quel. (I must admit that my current
project would align me with the "Bayliner Brigade", rather that the forces of
virtue, but if appointed as dictator, I promise to impartially and
objectively enforce my esthetic criteria.)

The tide finally filled things in and the wind dropped out making
getting out much easier. While Maggie and I watched, Jim the boat
builder took Toby out for a spin in the hopes of getting a fish
himself. He was unsuccessful, and even manage to give Toby his first
solid ding when he plowed into a cobbly part of the beach coming back
in.

However, he did declare Toby a fine and fit craft and thought I could
sell them as fast as I could build them. I don't think I'll give up
my day job, but if the local sportfishing community would like to
subsidize my learning to be a better builder, I just might oblige.
Certainly Toby looked very pretty as Jim rowed him back and forth
looking for fish, and the view could stand a few more like him!

YIBB,

David
