Re: [bolger] Bolger plans

Bolger also writes an article about twice a month in the
magazine _Messing About In Boats_, which is another
source where you can learn about which boat plans they
have for sale.

http://www.messingaboutinboats.com/
Mr Bolger's address is on the bottom of this message.

He only responds to faxes or snail mail, but he does respond quickly.

Herb Payson at

http://www.instantboats.com/

has a selection of Mr Bolger's most popular designs at very cheap prices.

There is no catalog of Mr Bolger's designs, he has been prolific beyond
belief with almost 700 completed designs. This Yahoo group and the other
Yahoo groups Bolger2-4 have lots of info in the files and photos on his
designs.

He has written several books on boat design--Small Boats, The Folding
Schooner, Different Boats, 30 Odd boats and Boats with an Open Mind. All
these books feature his designs, only the last one is still in print.
You might find some in your local library. Bookfinder.com will locate
all of them, it only takes money.

I recently stumbled across a website that an indivdual was in the
process of builing one of Mr. Bolger's boats. What I am wondering is
where can one find plans????Thanks...Jim
And another question that has been hashed around is whether the plans
copyright has anything to do with your ability to build a boat from
whatever information you have. In other words what is covered by any
copyright, paper, or boats?

At the end of the day, one doesn't see very many CSD Martha Janes for
sale, one sees Bolger Martha Janes. So I lean in his direction on
this subject.

It's not a typo. It stands for "the powers that be".
I didn't mean to imply that the dispute was the cause of CSD's
business troubles. PCB&F did suggest in print that the management of
CSS was not above reproach. Other than that, I don't know, or really
care, much about any of it. The only active point is whether the
present management of CSD has the rights to sell the PCB plans that
they advertise.

"TPTB" is a typo for ????

My Idaho plans from CSD are terrible copies. Unresponsive to emails
regarding another subject. A couple promises made but never followed
through on.

I'd stay with PB&F or Payson.

This is not exactly true, as I have heard it retold from insiders. I was
given the story from someone who knows and respects Bolger & Wolford.
There was a dispute, yes, but from the outside, both sides acted
reasonably. There was an old agreement, and TPTB wanted a new agreement.

What really send CSD down was the failure/redirection of Small Boat
Journal. Bernie was unable to keep up the level of plans buying, because
he couldn't reach the same size audience anymore. The business stopped
being viable for him, at a time that involved greater financial costs.
He closed it down. Someone else bought it, and to all accounts, is not
being run as well, the copies of the plans have gone downhill, and PCB&F
is unhappy about the whole thing.

Plans available from PCB&F, Payson, and a couple from WoodenBoat magazine.

I agree. I have it in writing from the Bolgers that HH Payson is the
only authorized reseller of plans, and only certain plans that he has
personal experience with. My experience with them is that they reply
thoroughly and prompty to requests for information and plans.

It would be good to have some clarification. My understanding was
that there were a few designs that were done with CSD as the client,
both before and during the Bernie Wolford era. Wolford also sold
other Bolger designs, not created explicitly for him.

There was a dispute. (As I understand it, PCB&F came to believe that
CSD was selling copies of plans and not appropriately forwarding
royalties.) PCB withdrew from CSD the right to sell all designs
except the ones created for CSD and for which they had contractual
rights.

Thereafter, CSD went away and was resurrected by different
management. I don't know what rights they properly have, but a quick
look at the site suggest the only Bolger plans they are selling are
the ones commissioned by CSD in the past. So, probably they are OK.

I don't think I'll ask Jerry Estes about the matter. I was thinking
a better idea would be writing the Bolgers. If CSB does not have
permission then I would feel obliged to pay Mr. Bolger also, then at
least I would not have a guilty conscience.

I bought plans for the Brick, I am faced with more knee surgery and
the only small boat I have at the moment just happens to be a paddle
boat. The rest of my fleet are just to big to take out for an hour of
fishing or sailing. I had to do much "splaining"(ala I love Lucy)to
my wife as to why I needed another boat. The paddle boat was actually
her idea. I don't know how in the world I'm going to get the Gull
past her radar screen? I will definitely buy those plans from an
authorized agent of or the Bolgers themselves. My bad.

Whether or not CSB might have a legal right with reference to the copyright and contract
law to distribute Bolger plans has been the subject of much previous discussion in this
forum. Both CSB and Duck Flat Boats (Australia) are definitely NOT approved to do so by
the Bolgers.

There's a message somewhere here indicating a blessing by PCB for Payson and the one or
two available from Wooden Boat.

I wrote to Jerry Estes at CSB to ask his point of view on this but was completely ignored.
If you get an answer from him, please share it.
