Scandalous

I posted this topic before but apparently it vanished, so forgive me
if it shows up twice.

I'm getting ready to order a sprit sail for my Cartopper - now, I'm
talking about a square sail with a diagonal sprit (no boom), NOT a
triangular sail with a sprit boom.

After reading several articles about reefing methods for sprit sails,
I sent e-mail to Harold Payson asking him if he offered the option of
reef points on his sails. His response was, "Sprit sails don't have
reef points, if over powered by the wind take the sprit out and let
the peak flop."

I'm aware of "scandalizing" a sprit sail as an option to reduce
canvas but I'm concerned about how useful a scandalized sail is. For
one thing, you're making a triangle out of a sail that was designed
to perform as a square as well as removing its only spar. It seems
like a last-ditch answer to reefing.

Has anyone out there used scandalizing as a method of reefing?
Observations & suggestions?

Thanks,
Kellan
