Re: finishing Micro
It is safe and sane advice like this that can turn an all day
painting job into a few fun hours. Prep work should be tedious, paint
should be fun with a spray gun.

David,
Parden me for giving unasked for advice but the
way to get a crisp line with masking tape is after you
put it on, you first paint the edge with the same
color that is under the tape. This will seal the tape
and not allow the different color to creep under.

Parden me for giving unasked for advice but the
way to get a crisp line with masking tape is after you
put it on, you first paint the edge with the same
color that is under the tape. This will seal the tape
and not allow the different color to creep under.

Lincoln,
thank you for the tip. In my line of work, I have found that
every person has a special need, my special need happens to be with a
paint brush. I just really stink at fine work with a brush. The
masking tape has been really helpful for myself with poor motor
control. It did creep in under the tape in spots, but I was able to
clean it up with mineral spirits.
The finish I wound up with is acceptable. The semi-gloss paint
shows real well. I used a roller and tipped with a brush, this made
for a real smooth job after just two coats. The cockpit needs a
second coat, and the varnishing is not finished; but I am going to go
ahead and paint the bottom so we can give her a try next weekend.
Lake Cochituate? I want a safe launch, and retrieve place close to
home so that any glitches won't involve a long drive for tools or
help.
I will let you know what the prognosis is later on in the week.

thank you for the tip.
The cockpit needs a
second coat, and the varnishing is not finished; but I am going to go
ahead and paint the bottom so we can give her a try next weekend.

help.

I have found that in the time it takes me to apply masking tape, I can
in most cases achieve acceptable results doing the edge with a small,
high quality brush instead. That way I don't have to find dried out
splotches that creep under the tape, either. I can clean up any
mistakes while still wet. Or are you spray painting?

Whoa! This is a big job. Yes, many of the group warned me of this.
This boat is a snap to build, but it takes hours and hours of
finishing due to its volume. I must have spent close to 40 hours
just sanding fairing and applying masking tape. I guess it depends
on whether or not you want an upclose boat, or a twenty foot boat. I
figure that if I have to stare at that bulkhead to the cabin for
hours upon hours, then it really should be first rate.
Today, I painted the second coat on the deck, painted the bow well,
cockpit, and masked off the hull to do a second coat on that. This
took over 6 hours. Sanding the crud and applying tape is what takes
the time.
One of the advantages of being a Fine Arts Director is that you get
free painting advise from art teachers. Let me tell you, they know
what they are doing. Recommended tools: 1/4" brush, 3M Blue masking
tape, penetrol, oil based paint (Kirby's, its local)good brushes 1",
2", 4" and a roller. I roll and tip the paint after thinning it with
the appropriate amount of Penetrol. I have to say, "This boat is
starting to look great!" I still forgot to paint the cockpit hatch,
Oh well, I will finish it bright.
Will we be sailing by Friday?
Oh, yes: the gin and tonic for afterwards is a necessary supply.
pardon the typos.
