schooner suggested to me that investment in some sort of crane/winch
assembly might be worthwhile. I did see a picture of one such: a pole
with a winch attached to the trailer to do the fold/unfold while on
the trailer.

We finally launched the schooner. having arrived at the lake
everybody went off to set up camp, bbqs, and billies so while they
were faffing around i backed into the water and cut her loose. she
rolled off then drifted back in , promptly hitting the mudguard and
punching a hole through the hull! This is starting to sound like a
David Ryan story. a mate came down when he heard the splash and we
unfolded , just like that, dropped in 2 masts, a rudder and hoisted
the jib before anyone noticed.
first day of sailing was withjib and reefed main. 3 adults and 4
kids at a time. 15-20 knts all day. our family camped out and next
morning we had the lake to ourselvesand had a sunrise sail with me
and six kids under full Main and jib By 9 am the wind got up so that
was it for the day.
monday morning wesailed with all sails me and 5 kids aged 5 to 11 ,
wind got up to 15 knts . absolutely superb. we even planed for a
short distance before running out of lake.
Now came the challenge of folding it and getting it on the trailer,
with just my wife and I. , since we had the lake to ourselves again.
On the first attemptthe stern took off up the beachand we had to
drop it, next attempt was too slipperrrrrryyyyyy, no3 westill wern't
to happy and when we dropped it back a 3/4" pulley had dropped into
the 1/16 gap between the hulls. 1 hinge cracked badly but was saved
from disaster by the SS straps over the hinge.
Bugger
next attempt went quite smoothly and the final landing was very
easy .
next task was getting onto the trailer with no winch and the back of
the trailer 10" out of the water .
this went quite smoothly with me pushing after we had both lifted it
onto the first line of rollers.
Lessons learnt ideally 2 fit adults to launch and retrieve , very
shallow water for thr folding and keep kids well away.
sailing with 3 adults and5 kids still leaves plenty of room.
Next time take some epoxy putty.
Start saving for the winch and the fibre glass bottom.
Oh it sure feels good to be on the water, and ive still got some
boatbuilding to do so I don't have to start thinking about
the 'next 'boat.
My wife wouldnt let me stop at the photo shop on the way home, shes
going to send them off to a lab that puts them up on the internetas
well. Grrrrrrr.
Cheers Paul
