Re: Texas Dory Boat Plans
If it's the Coastal 22 in the Orrell info, it is not the same.
Possibly similar, though it's hard to tell from the info, but the
Beachcomber is shown with cuddy cabin and the Coastal 22 is shown
open. I think the hulls are a little different, but I can't tell how
much. Coastal looks beamier in photo, maybe.

That dory is very different from the Atkins dory-skiff.

The credit is given in chapter 4 "LIGHT DORY TYPE V" for the naming of the
Gloucester Gull. Bolger refused to design a sailing rig, so Jim Orrell
(Capt) got somebody in Scotland to devise a very small boom lugsail for it.

It was someone in Scotland, "But I'll have no part of it."

Let's review. As I recall Capt. O was a plans-for-sales vendor who
bought the rights for plans from various designers, including Phil
Bolger. Somewhere Bolger gives Capt. O the credit for the name
Gloucester Gull. There are also discussions about the Gull sailing
rig, and I can't remember if Bolger did it and was sorry, or Capt. O
got someone else to do it, and Bolger was sorry.
Anyway, if John Atkin's name is attached to this skiff, the person to
ask is his widow, Pat Atkin. Try Atkin & Company, PO Box 3005,
Noroton, CT 06820. There is a web site here under designs and kits:

THe Orrell thread got me looking thru the old promotional material I
still have. THere's a picture of the Gull with the sail rig that
Bolger complains about in an essay somewhere. THe rig kind of confirms
Bolger's comments. The sail's size is somewhere between that of a
large bandanna and a very small tablecloth.

This is kind of a strange message. I wonder what the story behind it
is? I have an old stack of promotional stuff from Orrell from when I
was a kid which I used to look through.

Payson offers, or used to, some plans that aren't on the web site.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN BUY DORY PLANS FOR BUILDING A
DORY.
Try Dynamite Payson, who advertises as Down East Dories (Beach
Road 33, South Thomaston ME 04858, $3.00 for study packet) in
Boatbuilder. He sells plans formerly offered by Capt Jim
Orrell. He also sells plans for many of Phil Bolger's designs,
including the Gloucester Gull rowing dory.
I didn't remember any other dory plans sold by Payson so I went to his
web site, and all I found was a special link to the Glouchester Dory and
book.
