Re: Black Skimmer.

Where can I find more pictures of the black skimmer?

And you may already have seen my scan of the 1988 Small Boat Journal
article about Black Skimmers in Florida at:

To all those who have responded to my enquiry
regarding Black Skimmer - thanks for the info, it is
much appreciated. If I am able to buy the boat in
question I'll keep the group updated.

Andrew.

There is a possibility - just a possibility - that I
might be able to purchase a used Black Skimmer
some
time in the next few months. If anyone in the
group
has sailing experience, especially coastal
sailing,
with a 'Skimmer' I'd be pleased to hear from them
regarding overall sailing characteristics.
You got some good advice from Gilham. I sailed the BS on Florida Bay,
from the old ads in SBJ (may it rest in peace). It's a fine sailing
boat. We had here out in 20 kt winds, gusting to 25 kts. I was
relatively inexperienced then (and not an old salt now, mind you). Still,
the boat was really nice to sail, handled itself well, and was quite
forgiving of our errors.

Saiing upwind is simple--the boat steers itself and has a slight corkscrew
motion that is very nice and pleasant.

The cabin, though, is not large, and not entirely comfortable. It's
camping out with a fixed tent. It worked well enough for us, but I doubt
that my wife would have done it repeatedly. (Well, she wasn't my wife
then, and she is now, so it wasn't a disaster, I guess.)

I'd love to own such a boat. If it were in the budget, I'd get one.
Haven't the patience to build one now, though, I've a 3-year old, and
therefore not enough time to build a real sailing boat.

Offshore? It's not really an offshore boat. She'll take wind and waves,
but if you need a genuine self-rescuer, then I wouldn't put her on the top
of my list. YMMV.
Thanks Todd,

...for your info on the 'Skimmer'. I'd like to trade
rides but geography gets in the way. The boat I speak
of is in New Zealand (my home). I am working at the
moment in Alberta, Canada, and won't be back in NZ for
perhaps another 6 months. And it's not 100% certain
yet that she is for sale, but I'm hoping she will be.

Andrew.

I'd be pleased to know also whether the Skimmer has
knockdown survivability - I believe PCB did design it
with this intent in mind. And whether the fold-down
mainmast version (which I would like) is a practical
proposition. Any comments?

Thanks,
Andrew.
