Re: [bolger] Gull Rowing Speed

Andrew --

As far as Sue and I were able to make the jig correctly, my Gull is
more or less to plan. Important difference are:

Filleted chines and stem instead of wood

Buttblocked bottom

Glass from sheer to sheer

Just the middle frame and seat.

And yes, I waded out and got my oars.

David

David,

Your enthusiasm for the Gull is infectious - I've
noted your earlier comments too. Have often pondered
the building of a Gull (still pondering), and just
wanted to ask if yours is the standard model, built as
per PCB plans.. Did you retrieve the oars??

Andrew.

Rowing out against the wind at at effort I'd compare
with brisk walking I was doing 3.5mph.
The drift measured at 1.3mph.
Not too surprisingly when I was rowing with the wind I
could do about 5-6mph.
Rowing across the wind with a moderate effort gave
4.7.-5.2 mph.
I didn't get a look at the GPS when we were surfing,
but I did manage to throw the oars over the side!

FBBB --

I went fluke fishing yesterday. On the premise that I was going to
find a hotspot and would want to mark it, I brought my GPS. I got
skunked, but I did get to find out how fast the Gull would go.

Rowing out against the wind at at effort I'd compare with brisk
walking I was doing 3.5mph.

The drift measured at 1.3mph.

Not too surprisingly when I was rowing with the wind I could do about 5-6mph.

Rowing across the wind with a "moderate running" effort gave 4.7.-5.2 mph.

I didn't get a look at the GPS when we were surfing, but I did manage
to throw the oars over the side!
