Re: Mouser

DonB and PHV,

I suggested a strip-built bottom and ply sides to PCB in my
correspondence with him, and he was all for it. I don't acually have
any experience with strib building, but it doesn't LOOK too hard
(famous last words).

The clinker-sided Mouser is Richard Zapf's "Garfield" that I mentioned.
It's discussed in several early issues (Volume 1) of MAIB. Phil
doesn't think the clinker sides look right, and the slab sides don't
bother me in the slightest.

It seems to me that about 15 years ago, someone built a Mouser with
lapstrake construction with PCB's approval. I'm not quite sure how
the chine form was adapted. I think there was a murky picture in MAIB.

Hi Matthew, sorry to say I have never seen a Mouser.
When I do my annual troll through my Bolger books, dreaming of
building every other design, Mouser is right at the top of the list.
I hope you do build this beautiful little classic dayboat/speedster.
I guess you will use ply for the topsides. How about the bottom?
This would have been double-diagonal kauri on battens here in NZ in
earlier times.

Greetings all!

A small project that I had commissioned from PB&F quite a while ago to
modify Zephyr with outriggers for stable family sailing, fell through
(I'm not ready to build it, and they haven't got the time). I applied
the money to a couple of stock plans, including the almost 50-year-old
Mouser 16' catboat design (a.k.a. "Garfield" in Richard Zapf's clinker-
sided version).

I've always loved catboats, having spent a lot of time on Cape Cod as a
kid (my Dad is from Chatham) and it's hard to beat the big cockpit for
family sailing.

Other than a very early MAIB article by Zapf and the relevant chapter
in SMALL BOATS, I haven't been able to find any info. Does anyone have
any old articles or photos that they might be willing to share, or fuel
for discussion on this old design?

For those without SMALL BOATS, I will upload a scan from the book to
the "Files" section.

Matthew
