Re: Bolger Tennesse Plans
As of about two weeks ago, Tennessee plans were $100 from Phil Bolger
& Friends. There is no builder's key, just the notes on plans, but
everything seems very straightforward. June Bug would be a perfect
training project, since it's about a 50% scale Tennessee.
I actually mentioned something in my correspondence to PCB about
using Tennessee as a canal cruiser. I was referring to usage, not
modifications (I would just and side curtains and a mosquito net for
comfortable sleeping in the cockpit). Phil mentioned that a long-
house, river cruiser version had been done by a builder in
consultation with him, but he cautioned agains adding much weight to
the design.
It seems to me that the good performance on low power (10 kt from 10
hp) in exchange for spartan accommodations is the whole point of
Tennessee. There are many on PCB designs with more enclosed living
space. If it were me, I would consider adding a lightweight,
removeable, ply/plexi/canvas pilot house for cold-weather use.

Mr. Bolger's address is at the bottom of every post on this group to
order plans.
Re more beam, The whole point of these really narrow sharpie designs is
that they are really narrow. Mr. Bolger has many power designs that have
more beam per length, Champlain comes to mind. If you really want the
performance of the narrow power sharpie and you want more beam the next
one up is Dakota.

as far as the benefits. It would make the Tennesse wallow around a lot,
slower for the same power, bigger wake, poor handling, etc.
The Tennessee has a surprising amount of room for a 6' beam. Unless your
living aboard longer that a normal vacation of a week or just weekending,
she'd have plenty of room and storage.
I would doubt that for the money, one could build a better 29 foot power
boat just as she's designed. I you have a bit bigger budget, I'd look at
the Dakota or Minnesota, or ( and trust me here ) if you have a "BIG"
budget, why not a Wyoming? :>)
Jeff
And didn't I hear him say he wanted an 8' beam with a tad more space?
Et voila!

Lots of Tennessee photos at the Square Boats site, maybee someone who
knows how can post the address. Searching most engines with "Bolger"
and "Tennesssee" as key words will get you some hits. See Duckworks
eMagazine for a Tennessee building project article. There's Dakota
plnas and photos in the photo area of this group. In the "Bolger2"
egroup Peter Lenihan has posted shots and scans of Windemere, a 31'
by 8' river cruiser. Also there in a folder called Bolger Scans are
files of Minnesotta, my personal favorite Bolger river cruiser.
Actual building planns can only be purchased from Phil Bolger %
Friends in Gloucester MA, address and fax number are in the files or
bookmark section of this group. Or perhaps from a member whose got an
unused set he'll part with.
Why? Are you gonna' build one? Why fool around, build a Super Brick
instead, save money on gas and get some $50 kickbacks to boot! You
KNOW you want to.

Perhaps you would prefer the Dakota that has a wider beam and also
is slightly longer. The Bolger designs have a beam to length ratio
that makes them fuel efficient. Adding beam width to the Tennessee
would no doubt produce larger wakes and require more power to drive
the hull. There are a few Dakotas under construction now and
Tennessee's.
I like the Dakota because it has much more room, free board and it
doesn't require a lot more work than the Tennessee.
