[bolger] Re: Fibreglassing Chebacco

Dear Brad,

As far as I can tell, everyone is using Epoxy these days. It's a bit more
expensive than polyester, but less brittle, and much more impervious to
water.

I've used both in the past, and epoxy seems better in every way.

We used to use vinylester with kevlar for white water kayaks (canoes to UK
readers). This was all "glass" construction, so I can't say if it would
stick to wood. However, except for being much more flexible in use (after
curing) the resin appeared to be very like polyester.

Does anyone have any experiance or comments on vinyl-ester resins? They
seem to be a comprimise between the epoxy & polyesters.

I used epoxy on my Chebacco -- I wouldn't use polyester if it was free,
given the cost and time required to build the boat, as it just won't stay
stuck to the wood. I also have a cedar strip canoe that had to be reglassed
twice -- the second time I used epoxy. The instructions for that also said
to use polyester, but the advice dated from the early 70's, before epoxy
came into such general use.

I've also heard of polyester taped joints letting go -- this was at second
hand, but from a good friend. He built a Gypsy with epoxy at the joints and
polyester for the sheathing, but I would still use all epoxy.

I think even Payson is recommending epoxy these days, although his books do
say polyester.
