Re: "Alert" article & Bolger Whaler Ketch
Good luck with the skimmer negotiations Andrew.
The photo of Alert is at-
www.leow.de/chinese/chinese.html
Also, hauled out at Okahu Bay is a Bolger Whaler Ketch, the 28'9"
boat he describes in Different Boats as close to a work of art he
has designed. This one is certainly that, and beautifully built. I
must take some photos for the group.

Hello Don,
Thanks for your reply - yes, I noted (just as I hit
the 'send' button..) the name 'Manatee' in your
header, and remembered seeing it in one of the books,
which alas I don't have with me. Lovely looking boat -
if I recall there was also a considerably larger
design as well, based on a similar Thames barge-style
mid section.
Will be back in NZ in Dec. for a few weeks - hope to
be able to see Blake's Skimmer while there.
Andrew.

Don,
I'm not sure that I can still find the July issue of
Yachting Monthly here (Alberta). Would be pleased if
you could fill me in briefly on 'Alert' - is it a
Bolger design?
Thanks,
Andrew.

The english magazine Yachting Monthly, july 2002 has a short article
about Alert, arriving in Martinique, out of the Canary Islands.
80 year old Jim Melcher first sailed the Atlantic in her in 1995,
and has hauled her on a low loader over the Rockies from Florida to
Seattle.
The article is very positive about Alert, and there are 2 detail
photographs, including Melchers bronze leeboard fittings. He is
about to change the rig again, from chinese gaff to true chinese
lugsail.
