You must be thinking of someone else. I don't have a scruffy gull,
just the Hartley and a bateau D4 that I built for my daughter. We
have only used the D4 twice because we have a tiny car with no
roof rack or tow hitch. I am working on a plan to rig a roof rack
for my sister-in-law's subaroo so that we can swap cars on the
weekend.

A colleague from a previous employer is building a bateau CK17
(http://www.bateau.com/plans/sail/CK17.php3)which looks like
being a hell of a lot of fun. He should have that finished by
Christmas.

We plan on getting down a day or 2 before and staying almost till
new year After all the family stuff i plan to almost camp on the
beach so I can sail every day. she should look good moored with all
the gin palaces. I'll keep yuo posted. I know theres a bnice
ply /epoxy Dolphin sails out of the club there.
D oyu still have the scrutffy Gull?

I agree. I think there are some types of fungus and mildew
that will be defeated by salt, but plenty of rot thrives in the
stuff.

That and good encapsulation.

I would be thrilled and honoured to help you take the schooner for
a spin. Don't know about my Hartley though - what with building a
house and flitting back and forth to Brisbane on business I find it
hard to grab time to work on her. I suppose I could always take
my daughter's D4.

Speaking of rot - the transom on my Hartley TS16 was so badly
rotted that when I dried it out the wood cracked. I mean, like a
mud puddle cracks when it drys out - all sort of crazed and black.
Some people who see it think that it must have caught fire. I have
removed all the transom framing and decided that I am going to
take 100mm off the end of the boat to get back to good ply.
Rather than reconstruct the transom in the same (rot prone)
manner, I have cut a new transom from 12mm exterior ply and
pre-glassed it. I plan to fit it to the hull stitch-and-glue style, and
hopefully that will eliminate most of the places where water can
accumulate.

Klaus (who posts to rec.boats.building occasionally) lives in the
northern suburbs and has a very nice Kirby NIS. There must be
heaps of others. I will ask around.

as i live next a huge salt lake i'll give you my experiences.
Doug fir living in near or on pure salt looks like rope after 100
years. A 10' x6' railway sleeper yields a nice 2x4 when cleaned up.
the salt also ruins blades. dry salt lying around wil suck up any
moisture, but , will eventually migrate to coat every thing
insight. . Linseed oil over old salty wood goes crystaline.
IF any body wants some I've got 100's millions tons out back.
ive spent years cleaning it all out of my landyachts.
I think the ventilation lobby should be listened to
I'll find a photo of some nice stuff to post . I just spent a few
days on the lake filming the next model KIA car to be released inb
Europe .

back to schooners.
Thanks for the welcome back Bruce. I plan to be bringing the
schooner down to Perth for CHristmas for some sailing at Rockingham.
Any chance of a bit of a Messabout of our own . I'd love to see some
other home builts and down a sausage and ale?
do yuo know of anybody else whod fit the bill?
Cheers Paul
