Re: Teal Portsmouth Yardstick

I've poked around the web looking for the original Teal with no
success. However, on the US Sailing web site there is an invitation
to e-mail Darline Hobock for a provisional rating number. You may not
have the info to do that, but I'm sure she would willingly answer the
question on which design is referred to.

I recall that O'day boats built a small sloop called the Teal. I had
one of their 12' Widgeons and I think it's handicap was 112. With
it's sloop rig, etc I would imagine it was a lot faster than a bolger
Teal.

I'd look for a formula to calculate your handicap and take that to
the race committee.

I'd be real surprised if it was the Bolger Teal. I have some vague
memory of a fiberglass production boat from years ago, but that could
be figment of imagination. I would think the Yardstick ratings would
be limited to classes with some notion of a class builder and
dimension control.

Perhaps you can find an old compendium of one design classes in a
library.

Does anyone know if the Portsmouth Yardstick handicaps
that US Sailing has on thier website for the Teal are
for the Bolger Teal, or for some other boat?

I am getting smacked pretty heavy in our weeknight
races, and am curious if it is me or if I am using
a handicap from a much faster boat.

BTW: the Pn's from US Sailing for the TEAL are:

Design Bf 1 Bf 2-3 Bf4-5 Bf 6
Teal TEAL 99.2 (100.0) 99.3

For comparision:

Sunfish SF 99.7 102.7 100.3 97.3 95.0

And lower is "faster."
