I think designer Richard Woods (http://www.sailingcatamarans.com/)
says somewhere that fitting a boat with electronics will take as
much time as building the hull. He may have a point there.

I usually get very skeptical when I read stuff like that below, but
I've been around a Honda 9.9 lately and it was impressively quiet. Not
sure what year it was.

Jeff, I am a pretty good bargain hunter and I always go for a great
deal. I want to tell you about a great deal that you might over look.
Of all the 4 stroke outboards made today the price fluctuates greatly
as does quality and warranty but one thing stands out over everything
else. Fuel economy and warranty are my gauge that I judge my
outboards by.

The absolute king of fuel economy and best warranty go hands down to
Honda. Compared to Hondas 3 cylinder design and their 25 to 40%
better fuel usage the higher initial price(if you can't find a
dealing dealer)is offset when you complete your trip. At trolling
speeds of around 2000 RPM the Honda makes no vibration and is barely
audible. The Honda has a balancing counter shaft unlike everyone but
Suzuki.

That gives it silk smoothness from idle to top end where you can
still talk in a normal voice. It sounds more like a car motor with a
very good muffler. You'll pay more for it but you'll pay less for
fuel. I have owned three Hondas so far and I have sold them for
almost what I paid for them. You can't go wrong on resale then
either. The Honda is IMHO hands down the best bargain in long term
value. It's the difference between cheap and thrifty.

I often wonder sometimes when building a boat the size of the Wyoming that
it's not the labor, money, or building issues that are the hardest. Most
of us can knock a decent boat together but all the tech things such as
engines, heads, electronics, galley equipment, etc. is what goes well
beyond my experience.

By mining the expertise of the group, I can make up for my lack and
knowledge and of research in lew of jumping into the building phase. But
I'm learning....

Thanks to all for the responses on the motors.

Jeff
Merc and Yammies of that size share the same powerheads, each with their own
electronics, induction systems, and their own unique lower ends. Yammie
offers a 'bigfoot' option called 'high-thrust'. If the standard 25 HP 4
stroke is the F25, then the high thrust version is the T25.

Honestly, I'd buy 'em based purely on price. Get the one you can get the
best deal on for both motors and rigging. There isn't enough of a difference
between the two to worry about. If getting Mercs saves you $1500 for the
pair, then you've got $1500 more for outfitting or the cruising kitty.

I went through the same quandary earlier this year and wound up with
Mercury. In so doing, I saved about $500 and got a better warranty over the
Yamaha . The motor is great, btw. I'd buy it again.

Have you emailed Powerboat Reports to see if they have anything? They do
a lot on the big motors, they might have done some smaller motors.

A local company that rents houseboats here switched to Merc Bigfoots
a few years ago and loves them, that must be the worst case use
scenario of all. Also he likes the thrust, power, bigger wheel and
good dealer net. I'd lean to Merc, and I'd lean to the next size up
on the thought that you can never have too much power.

I like Phils idea for "theft-proofing", just paint the motors to
match the vessel, then no one knows for sure what they are ( have
your local signmaker make a decal calling them "sluspot 500's or
something )or wants them. Ask about a good price for spare cowl
covers as part of the oroginal purchase, when your bargaining
position is still good. Then paint the spare cowl, not the one with
the decals. Paint the body and lower unit, but with no sanding or
prep whatsoever, then if you ever need to sell the paint will come
off cleanly with oven cleaner spray.

Just my 3.5 US (2 cents Canadian, approx.) cents worth.

I have a fishing guide friend who has had nothing but trouble with his
Yamaha engines, and has sworn never to buy them again. He has several boats,
all high powered Yamaha 2-strokes. All the trouble he's had has been covered
by warrenty, but still...

I'm looking at engines to buy now so I can get them fitted to the Wyo. It looks like the Yamaha T25 and Mercury 25 BF are about the same price. Both are high thrust motors.

I don't want to open a can a worms but which might be better?

I know Mercury is just about everywhere but have heard the Yamaha's are great, even PB&F thinks they are good. But, how about dealers be available on the Great circle route? (ICW, Great Lakes, Mississippi, TX, etc.)

Bad point on the Yamahas are that they are big targets for theft so that probably makes them desirable.
