Re: MICRO Riff-Raff progress

I'm working on fitting out the cabin today. It'll be quite simple.
I've cut a pair or 1 by 6's to the curve of the sole, which will be
the berth risers. These I'll bond in place to form the inboard riser
and delineate the cabin sole area. Then I'll use the two flat upper
surfaces (hopefully parallel) and scribe outboard lines on the hull
with a straight edge and pencil. I'll tab scraps of 1 by 2 on 12"
centres to be the outboard supports for the berth flat. I plan to cut
a piece of 3/8 ply to be the berth flat and I'll just lay it across
the berth supports.

At an average width of 19", do I need cross beams to make a firm
berth?

Any simpler ideas out there?

Then its the forward dorade/shelf combo and the port-ta-potty/cabin
step box and that'll be it. Minor finishing touches like a lamp,
mirror, candle holder can be added later. But I figured I'd best get
the berths in befor the roof went on, much easier to get a 6'6" berth
flat into a 4' cabin when the roof is off.

No, I haven't done the keel yet. It's poured but sitting on a dolly
waiting for the BIG day. I have the incredible advantage of building
my Riff-Raff on a 9000 lb. capacity automotive allignment hoist with
a completely open center. When the time comes, we'll raise the hoist,
butter the lead with epoxy and simply push the down button. At least
I hope it'll be that simple.

Bruce Hector, off to cover himself in barrier cream, 3 layers of
vinyl gloves and epoxy everywhere, as usual. It's a good thing we
don't include the cost of ruined clothes in the price of our vessels
or we'd all be driving new Bayliners in clean yachting wear.
Congradulations! I know the feeling: I did exactly the same thing
about two years ago. And yes, I held the tiller in my hand...

Don't sweat the little things - She's a fine boat.

Bruce,
Good to hear she's coming together. Have you fitted the keel yet?
If so, could you outline briefly your assembly order - there seems to
be as many methods are there are Micro builders. I'd like to do most
of the work with the boat upside down for obvious reasons - the
thought of working against gravity on my back with epoxy isn't my
idea of fun. ("keel anxiety" claims another victim)

Thanks

Decked the cockpit today. Used 1/2" Crezone (a good one side type of
MDO made for exterior sign boards) set onto my deck beams and
stringers on 12" centres. Brushed on straight-up West Sys then
buttered all beams and stringers with a bead of West thicked up with
sawdust. Dropped deck on top and used drywall screws on about 6"
spacing as clamps.

I gotta' admit, it felt pretty good to sit in my little Riff-Raff's
self draining cockpit, leaning against the gunwales with my feet on
the oposite edge of the foot well draining a tall, cold can of suds
and dreaming of doing it for real at sea some day soon. I will not
however, admit to holding a broomstick (simulated tiller) in one hand
while making an outboard BBBRrrrrrrrrr noise. That was someone else.

I'm beginning to see a little light at the end of the tunnel. It just
may be possible for a novice builder like me, hamstrung by a complete
lake of skill, if not daring, to actually finish and launch a Bolger
Micro.

Thank God for the gap (Oh Lord, some incredible gaps, filling ability
of thickened epoxy. Now, if I can just remember to goop up and plug
those two 1/2 drain holes in her deepest point of rocker before
launching, she might actually float.
