The Bolger Modeler

(By way of explanation for the odd-ball questions of replacing perfectly good O/B power with inboard)

I am a RC Model Boat Builder. For 40 or more years, I have built mainly 1/8 scale operating Models of American homebuilt boats. Some years ago, I ran across Payson's books.this in turn led me on the long and degrading slippery slope <g> to PB, his books, and designs (and now this group).

I was intrigued to read in Payson that he felt 1/8 scale was the scale of choice for modeling. I had discovered that as well, albeit long before I had read him. The unfortunate problem is the LACK of suitable scale electric O/B's.. The few out there are either too big (upwards of 1/6 scale), or unsuitable for extended and serious use. This is why I yearn for PB inboard designs.

Most recently, I spent several 100 hours lofting (in CADD), and building components for the 22' Plywood Diesel Utility for Homebuilders, planning a stick-for-stick model with full operating features including sound effects. Neat little V-hull critter with a tunnel-set prop and outboard dingy rudder. With all the frames assembled and preparing to set them up on the strongback prior to setting the sheers, chines and keel, I was awaiting word from PB on a few details. The letter promptly came (in this respect PB certainly treats Model Boat Builders with the same respect as full-size builders.which may NOT be said for some of his seemingly well-heeled and corporately veiled peers). The first paragraph sent me from the drawing board to the Blended Scotch whisky. It seems that the design had never been built; a similar design refused to back down at all; the prop in tunnel being the culprit. Not ideal for a scale model intended for In-Water judging. End of that project.

The recent sightings (thanks to all who responded) of Dakota variants has rekindled the urge to do justice to a PB in a RC replica; the Commuter version perhaps the most likely. Thanks to ALL for helping me peel through PB's sweet onion of designs. Will keep you all posted.
